What you can start doing this week for adult acne, with or without an appointment

The frustrating thing about most acne advice is that it is either trivial, ineffective, toxic or unaffordable. Drink more water, wash with Witch Hasel or alternatively, commit to a course of medications. None of these “solutions” really explains why you have acne, now, as an adult.

This article explains the unique issue of adult acne . Everything below comes from the home therapy and diet sections of the acne protocol Dr. Steven Zodkoy wrote for Oxylon, and most of it costs nothing. It is written for adults, it is a wellness program rather than medical care, and it is meant to run alongside whatever your own physician has you doing, never in place of it.

Take the parts that fit your life. Partial is fine. It is better than another shelf of products.

Start with the plate, because it is the largest lever you control

Dr. Zodkoy’s acne diet guidance is short, which makes it easier to actually follow. Four things to reduce and one thing to add.

Reduce or avoid:

  • Simple carbohydrates. White bread, pastries, most breakfast cereals, the things that spike and drop quickly.
  • Sugar. Including the sugar you are not counting, in sauces, dressings, coffee drinks and anything labelled as a health snack.
  • Alcohol. This one matters more here than in most skin advice, because of where alcohol is processed. Every drink is work for the same system his model says is already behind.
  • Chemicals found in food. Preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, the long ingredient lists.

Note what is not on this list. Dr. Zodkoy restricts nightshades in some other skin protocols. He does not restrict them here. If you have read acne advice telling you to cut tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, that is not part of this protocol, and there is no reason to make your diet harder than it needs to be.

Add oily fish four times a week

The one addition is specific. Oily fish, with wild salmon and sardines named directly, four times a week.

Four times is more than most people manage, so make it easy rather than aspirational. Tinned sardines on toast is a legitimate meal. Tinned wild salmon works in a salad in four minutes. Cooking from scratch is not required and, honestly, not the point.

If you are in Orange County you have unusually good access to fresh fish, so the fresh version is worth using when it is convenient. But the tinned version counts. Consistency across the week matters more than the quality of any single meal.

Look at the chemicals coming in from everywhere else

Dr. Zodkoy names chemicals in our environment as an aggravating factor alongside diet. This is the part people skip, because it feels vague, so here is the concrete version.

Your skin and your household are a daily exposure. Cleaning sprays, air fresheners, scented candles, fabric softener, fragrance in laundry products, and the long ingredient lists in beauty and personal care products all add to the total. You do not have to overhaul everything. Pick the products you are exposed to most often and longest, which for most people means laundry, whatever you sleep in contact with, and whatever you put on your face and body daily.

This is also a quietly useful reframe for someone with adult acne. If your skincare shelf has fifteen products on it, some of what you are applying may be adding to the load rather than lowering it.

Move in ways that move blood

The protocol names three forms of exercise specifically: walking, whole body vibration and swimming. The theme is circulation rather than intensity.

  • Walking. The most underrated item in every one of these protocols. Daily, unremarkable, sustainable, and it moves blood through small vessels without adding stress.
  • Whole body vibration. A platform that vibrates while you stand on it. Short sessions, low effort, and useful if fatigue or time makes longer exercise unrealistic.
  • Swimming. Full body, low impact, and easy to find year round in Orange County.

You will notice that punishing workouts are not on the list. The goal is circulation and consistency, not exhaustion.

Daily care on the skin itself

Two things in the protocol are applied directly.

Oxylon Gel daily over the affected area. Daily is the operative word. Applied on the same schedule as anything else in your routine, it becomes automatic within a fortnight, and consistency is what the protocol assumes.

Home laser therapy. Dr. Zodkoy notes that home laser use would be extremely useful in this protocol. It is the one item here that involves buying a device, and it is the extension of the in person laser step into your own bathroom, applied over the areas that bother you most.

Adjunct care in your own neighborhood

The protocol recommends adjunct care with a local applied kinesiologist or chiropractor. This is worth understanding rather than skipping past.

Both work on the systems that influence circulation and the body’s regulatory balance rather than on the skin itself, which is consistent with the whole logic of the protocol. Orange County has plenty of both, and this is care you can start locally without any connection to Oxylon at all.

The honest part: it can look worse before it looks better

This is the paragraph most articles leave out, and leaving it out costs people their progress.

When an approach is built around detoxification and clearing rather than around suppressing the surface, the skin can look worse in the early weeks. It is a commonly described experience with approaches of this kind. If it happens, it does not mean the approach is wrong for you, and it does not mean anything definitive about where you will be later.

The practical implication is simple. Do not judge this at week three. The in person protocol runs twelve weeks for a reason, and the home elements follow the same timescale. If something is genuinely troubling you, or if the skin becomes painful or infected, that is a conversation for your own physician rather than a reason to grit your teeth.

About supplements

The protocol highlights lumbrokinase, berberine, milk thistle and burdock. Two of the four are aimed at liver function, which tells you where Dr. Zodkoy sees the leverage.

Named ingredients are informational only. Brands and dosages belong in a personalized plan, not in a blog article. Check for allergies and speak with your own healthcare provider before starting anything, especially if you are taking prescribed medication. Nothing here is a reason to stop or reduce something your doctor has prescribed.

A realistic first week in Costa Mesa

That is genuinely most of the home protocol, and none of it requires an appointment. When you want to know what is happening underneath, the next step is a conversation.
