Seven things you can change at home, starting this week
The frustrating thing about most migraine advice is that it is either impossible (avoid stress) or already done (drink water, sleep more). If you have been at this for years, you have heard all of it and you have tried most of it.
So this article is limited to what is actually in the home therapy section of the migraine protocol Dr. Steven Zodkoy wrote for Oxylon Wellness. It is offered whether or not you ever book a session in Costa Mesa, because most of it costs nothing and none of it requires a facility.
One framing note before the list. In Dr. Zodkoy’s working view, migraines involve a loss of vascular control in the brain, and the major triggers are chemical compounds from outside and inside the body that the liver has not fully detoxified. So the point of everything below is lowering total load and supporting stability, not hunting a single culprit.
Go through your house for chemical exposure
Dr. Zodkoy’s protocol calls for the removal of chemical heavy home and beauty products. This is the item people skip because it sounds vague, so make it concrete.
Work by room, one room a week, and pull anything that announces itself by smell from across the room.
- Laundry. Detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets. These sit against your skin for hours a day and are the single easiest swap.
- Cleaning. Multi surface sprays, bathroom cleaners, anything scented. Vinegar, baking soda and unscented castile soap cover most of what you need.
- Air. Plug in fresheners, aerosol sprays, scented candles. Open a window instead.
- Beauty and personal care. Perfume, hairspray, styling products, body lotion, scented deodorant. Fragrance is the usual offender.
You do not have to replace everything at once. Start with what is closest to your face and your skin for the longest each day, which for most people is laundry and personal care.
Get the additives out of what you eat
The protocol is direct here: foods with chemical additives should be avoided, alcohol should be avoided, and other known triggers should be avoided.
The practical translation of that is not a complicated elimination diet. It is buying more food that never needed an ingredient label, and reading the label on the rest. Preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, and the long chemical names you cannot pronounce are the category in question.
Alcohol deserves its own line because it is both a common trigger and a direct demand on the liver, which is the organ at the center of Dr. Zodkoy’s model. For someone working on load, it is doing damage on both counts at once.
Be gentle with yourself on the pace. Changing your whole grocery routine in one week usually collapses by week three. Change one category at a time.
Drink Oxylon water daily
Daily Oxylon water is the first item in the protocol’s home therapy list, and it is the home care piece that connects most directly to the oxygen side of the in centre sessions.
It is also the easiest habit to attach to something you already do, which is how habits survive. Put it with your morning routine, not somewhere in the unstructured middle of the day.
Use a home laser, daily and during episodes
Dr. Zodkoy notes that home laser therapy would be extremely useful for daily prevention and for pain relief with acute episodes. This is the one part of the home protocol that works on both timescales.
For daily use, the in centre positioning is 10 minutes at the base of the skull. During an acute episode, the protocol directs the laser directly over the area of pain instead. That is a meaningful distinction to remember when you are in the middle of one and not thinking clearly.
If you want to know how a home unit fits with the rest of your routine, the team at Oxylon Wellness can talk you through it.
Move, in the specific ways the protocol names
Exercise is listed as important, with three named as excellent: walking, whole body vibration, and swimming.
Notice what they have in common. None of them are high intensity, none involve pounding, and all of them move blood without spiking stress. For anyone whose attacks have been set off by hard exercise in the past, that pattern is reassuring.
- Walking. Available, free, repeatable. Orange County weather removes most of the usual excuses.
- Whole body vibration. Low effort, short sessions, easy on days when energy is low.
- Swimming. Full body, low impact, and gentle on the neck and shoulders where a lot of people carry tension.
Consistency matters more than intensity here. Twenty minutes of walking on most days does more for this model than one hard session a week.
Add adjunct hands on care
The protocol recommends adjunct care with a local applied kinesiologist or chiropractor. Dr. Zodkoy is a chiropractor himself, and this reflects how he thinks about structure and function working together.
There is a practical logic to it for migraine specifically, given that the laser is positioned at the base of the skull. That region is where a great deal of neck tension concentrates, and hands on care addresses it from a different direction than anything else on this list.
Look for someone local to Orange County you can see consistently rather than someone excellent but two hours away.
Train mindfulness, and think of it as training
The protocol says mindfulness training is key, and names yoga, deep breathing, and meditation.
The word to hold onto is training. These are not things you do once when you feel an attack coming. They are practices that change how your nervous system handles ordinary load, and that only happens with repetition when you are fine.
Ten minutes of deep breathing daily, done on the boring days, is worth more than an hour attempted in a dark room during an episode. If you have tried meditation and hated it, start with breathing alone. It is the lowest barrier version and it is on the protocol’s own list.
About supplements
Dr. Zodkoy’s protocol includes supplements chosen to support liver detoxification and vascular stability, the two elements at the center of his model. The highlighted ingredients are 5-MTHF, which is the active form of folate, along with milk thistle, lithium, GABA, and an adrenal glandular.
These are suggestions only, and brand and dosage belong in a personalized plan rather than a blog article. Check for allergies and talk with your own healthcare provider before starting anything new, particularly if you already take migraine medication.
Give it a real trial
One last piece of honesty. Dr. Zodkoy’s migraine protocol is built around prevention rather than around stopping an attack in progress, and he wrote it to be evaluated over 8 to 12 weeks.
That applies to this home list too. Two weeks of low fragrance laundry detergent will not tell you anything.
Two months of the whole set might. The point of a prevention approach is that the change shows up in the frequency of what happens over a season, which means you have to give it a season.
Home changes go further with support behind them. Fill out the short migraine form and our team at Oxylon Wellness in Costa Mesa will reach out.
